Lincoln Memorial

The last stop on our evening tour was the Lincoln Memorial. Pictures and television do not even come close to showing us its actual size. It is massive.
Mrs. Landry said she would give me a dollar to climb up and sit on Lincoln's lab. So I asked one of my students to give me a boost up. I really wanted that dollar.

The White House

After dinner at Union Station, our tour bus dropped us off on Massachusetts Ave and we walked to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. We were able to see the White House through a fence. The Secret Service was called out to calm us down. We were all jumping for joy, however we jumped too close to the fence. Washington, DC can not handle all the "Southern style" enthusiasm. I guess!

The Monuments

During our walking tour we were able to view the WWII, FDR, and the Martin L. King Jr. memorials. It was interesting to see that all the memorials had a water element. The WWII and FDR memorials had waterfalls. While MLK jr. looked out towards the Lincoln memorial across a body of water.

Our Tour Guide

Our group was taken on a walking tour of several monuments. Some of the chaperones on Bus 1 nick named our tour guide "Mary Poppins". She
summoned us with a flowered umbrella. It was something to see every rushing toward a little lady holding up a flower covered umbrella.

Guided tour

After lunch on Thursday, we had a guided tour of Historic DC. We drove down Embassy Row. The National Cathedral was a breath taking sight. It was damaged during the earthquake and is being repaired. Mrs. Landry said, She would like to get married there. I hope she meant "remarried" to Mr. Landry. ;)
Which Embassy is currently unoccupied? Why?

Arlington National Cemetery

Our first stop this morning (Thursday) was Arlington National Cemetery. Our group was able to tour the cemetery using the Grayline tram. There was a guide on the tram that told us some interesting facts about Arlington. For example there are only two U.S. presidents buried in the Cemetery. Can you name them?
We also saw the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The changing of the guards was very interesting. The tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. My students were mesmerized. Every step they take has a meaning.

The tale of the missing bus

While we were visiting the Holocaust Museum one of our tour buses was MIA. I don't know all the details but Washington traffic is WILD. Everything turned out fine because the driver on bus 1 - Trinity came to the "rescue" and transported the students and chaperones safely to the National Air and Space Museum. Here is a picture of Ms. Greene before she found out her bus was missing in Washington, D.C traffic.

Holocaust Museum

The Daniel's Story exhibit was very moving. I can't believe people were subjected to such brutality. The students got to see examples of how the Nazis tortured the Jewish people. The exhibit was set up in chronological order. We were able to literally walk through events in young Daniel's life. It was amazing to see students compare and contrast Daniel's life before and after the rise of Hitler and the Nazis.

Museum of Natural history

Can you say "Holy Moly history"? The Museum of Natural History is jammed packed with the history of just about every thing that has existed on Earth. Mrs. Landry says "This is more science than history!"
Ms. Killian says, the umbrella she purchased at the gift shop better last a lifetime like the things in this museum!

Shopping trip

We stopped to buy souvenirs in downtown Washington, DC. We got to practice a new bus procedure "three minute rule.". Everyone had to be off the bus in three minutes or less to avoid a hefty fine. If there are 54 people on the bus, how long did it take each person to disembark the bus?

Arrival

We made it safely to the hotel. Everyone is almost tucked in and ready for a VERY BUSY Wednesday.
I can't wait to visit the Museum of Natural History tomorrow.
I will make Mrs. Landry a lover of history before we return or I will "die trying"! Ok, for extra credit tell me what was the figure of speech I used in this post.

National Museum of the Marine Corps

We saw many great tributes to the United States Marine Corps. It was fascinating to travel through history and see how the Marines affected important world events.
